My BHLDN Wedding Dress Experience
When every little girl dreams about their wedding day, one of the most important factors is: The Dress. Picking out your wedding dress is one of the most anticipated decisions of wedding planning. It’s THE dress you will remember for years. The one you’ll want to share with your children and their children and so on.
Where does one exactly go dress shopping? It’s a great question really. You have a couple different options. You can do some research and head to a local bridal shop which will have numerous designers and tons of options. You can pick a popular chain shop, like David’s Bridal, which will have lower budget options and more sizes. Or you can do like I did, and find a popular clothing company with a bridal collection.
As many of you know, I’m a J.Crew fanatic. Before we even got engaged, I was set on having a J.Crew wedding dress. They were all so simple and timeless. But OF COURSE, about 6 months before we got engaged, J.Crew discontinued their bridal line and got rid of it all. (Side note: I even tried emailing their customer service a month after we got engaged to see if they had ANYTHING left. One dress and it was short and just not my style)
But luckily that’s when I discovered BHLDN (pronounced Beholden), Anthropologie’s Bridal Collection. It’s an entire brand dedicated to weddings with wedding gowns, bridesmaid dresses, wedding accessories and decor. And it’s all GORGEOUS!!! As soon as I discovered it I became OBSESSED. Constantly searching and viewing their website borderline every day.
They are mostly an online shop but do offer some boutiques within their Anthropologie stores. One of those stores being the Philadelphia Anthropologie. I scheduled an appointment through their online portal for last October. It was super simple to schedule and they let you pre-select dresses you like from their website that they will pull ahead of time for you. SO convenient.
Fast forward to the week of my appointment, I get an email that they had new markdowns available on their site. I immediately take a look. The one dress I had been eyeing is on sale. Panic mode sets in. My first thought is: Will they have the dress in store if it’s on sale? I crazily call their customer service to ask and low and behold they told me that it would not be available in store. Therefore I did like every other sane bride out there, I ordered the dress with overnight shipping up to my parent’s house in Philadelphia. This way I could still bring the dress with me to the appointment but if I didn't like it, I could just return it. Otherwise it would be in the back of my mind for eternity.
The weekend finally arrived and I was staying with my parent’s. The dress I ordered had arrived and I was hesitant to try it on before my appointment. But my mother and sister insisted that I had to. It ended up being gorgeous and still one of my favorites. I decided I’d still bring it to my appointment so everyone could see and that way I could still compare it to the other dresses. (Note: this didn’t end up being my dress even though I did really love it!)

We arrived Saturday morning to the Philadelphia Anthropologie store. If you haven’t been there, I HIGHLY suggest you do. It is one of the most exquisite stores in America, built into an old Philadelphia home. Their BHLDN shop is in the basement and it’s an absolute dream. All of the sample dresses hanging, accessories in beautiful cases, and antique mirrors galore. We met with my consultant and were immediately offered champagne, #win!
They had already pre-pulled dresses for me that I had specified but we still took a few minutes to look around. Letting my bridal party and mom pull anything they wanted to see me in.
The first few dresses were for my mother’s sake. While they weren’t my style (sorry mom!), they were still such lovely dresses!
(For my mother's sake)
With each dress, my consultant would help me into it inside the fitting room and I’d walk outside in front of the three-sided mirror on a pedestal for everyone to see. It was truly the FULL bridal experience, just inside of an Anthropologie.
(Two dresses I ended up not choosing)
Finally I had narrowed my decision down to two dresses. I kept trying both of them on and off, having a hard time deciding. But then I asked to put a veil on with the one option and that was it. It was my dress and it was perfect. (Not pictured for obvious reasons lol)
Once my decision was made, I hung out in the dress a little (i.e. for as long as they’d let me) while my consultant finalized my measurements and ordered my dress. She said it was actually back ordered but will still arrive in just two months!! Now if you’re new to weddings and wedding dresses, that’s unheard of. Many dresses can take months and months to arrive. But those dresses are almost always custom made to your size.
BHLDN was such an incredible place to find my wedding dress at and I am so glad that I did. It was such a simple and pain-free process. My dress came so quickly and it was at a great price point too! BHLDN can be perfect for last minute brides since their turn-around time is so quick. It can also be great for low-budget brides. They have a great range of dresses with some at just a couple hundred dollars to some around $3,000 and everywhere in between. The only downside I have found is that they don’t have their own alterations department so you will need to go somewhere else for those services. But my consultant kindly handed me business cards for a few local places they use.
I can’t recommend them enough for anyone getting married, anyone in a wedding or anyone just daydreaming. I’m chomping at the bit to wear my dress and can’t wait!
